If you have, you're witnessing a natural phenomenon called a "Mast year."
What is a Mast Year?
A Mast year happens when trees, like our local maples, produce an unusually large number of seeds. This doesn't happen every year but typically every few years. When it does, it results in a bumper crop of seeds that can overwhelm wildlife and lead to lots of new saplings.
Brief History of Mast Years
The term "Mast year" is rooted in the Old English word mæst, which referred to nuts found on the forest floor. Mast years occur every 2-5 years and involve many types of trees, including oak, beech, blackthorn, hickory, and hazel. During these years, trees produce a significantly larger amount of seeds or nuts. For instance, an oak tree can produce up to 10,000 acorns in a single Mast year. This natural event is crucial for the propagation and survival of tree species, ensuring a burst of new growth when conditions are right.
Why Do Mast Years Happen?
- Weather: Warm, wet springs and mild summers, like we had in 2023, set the stage for a big seed year.
- Tree Cycles: Trees build up energy over several years and then release it all at once in a Mast year.
- Predator Satiation: With so many seeds, wildlife can't eat them all, allowing more to grow into saplings.
What's Happening in Central NJ in 2024?
This year, Central New Jersey is experiencing a big Mast year for maple trees. The weather conditions were perfect last year, and now we're seeing the result: tons of new maple saplings.
Impact on Your Yard
If you're noticing more maple saplings in your yard, you're not alone. While they might look cute, they can actually compete with your other plants for sunlight, water, and nutrients. For our customers at Whole 9 Yards Lawn Care and Landscapes, we've got this covered.
What Whole 9 Yards Will Do for You
- Bed Maintenance Clients: We will take care of these saplings during our regular maintenance visits, ensuring your flower beds and landscaped areas stay neat and healthy.
- Lawn Care Clients: These saplings naturally get cut out during regular mowing, but if you’re seeing them in your lawn, rest assured our fertilizer and weed control services will keep them from becoming a problem.
Why It's Important
Managing these saplings is crucial for maintaining the health and aesthetics of your landscape. Too many saplings can lead to overcrowding and can hinder the growth of your other plants.
